why “MicrOCoSm”?

The word “microcosm” means a small place, society, or situation that has the same characteristics as something much larger. That’s what the farm is to us. A micro-farm (only 1/8th acre!) that’s reflective of a larger movement to build our local food system for resiliency and self-sustainability.

Our vision

We farm to cultivate reverence for food as a cornerstone to our lives — a cultural, connecting force that situates our role in nature.

In the busyness of modern living, we’ve found it much too easy to disconnect to food: to buy groceries in a rush without knowing where it came from, who grew it, or how it was originally interconnected with the soil and its surrounding environment.

For us, food is about much more than sustenance. It’s central to our being. Nourishing food and the mindful act of preparing it is physically, mentally, and spiritually healing. We’ve embarked on a journey to play our small part in sharing that with our community.

How we do it

Using organic and regenerative practices to grow a variety of edible plants, Microcosm builds a relationship to the Earth through food.

We steward a small-scale, diversified vegetable farm in Waimānalo, on the island of O‘ahu, in Hawaiʻinuiākea. Guided by regenerative principles that prioritize long-term soil health and restoration, it’s our joy to grow a wide range of nutritious and delicious greens, root vegetables, herbs, and fruiting/specialty crops.

You don’t have to worry about consuming harsh chemical pesticides because we don’t use them. Our produce is grown using organic methods (and with a lot of love).

Our values

Celebrate the wonder and beauty of nature

We are fueled by a respect for the majesty of our environment and driven by a desire to engage authentically with the Earth.

Practice reciprocity with the land

Our mindset is never to dominate or control the land. We strive each day to ground deeper into an interconnected, more-than-human relationship, where we take care of the soil as much as it provides for us.

Build community around plants

“Community” encompasses the relationships we build on the farm and beyond. Whether you sink your hands in the soil, help with a harvest, or prepare a fresh, market-bought meal — each interaction strengthens a network of locally-grown nourishment.
